you are expected to write a 350-400 word long reflection. Make sure you respond to two of your friends, make sure they go beyond "I like your post" and wholeheartedly respond to something specific they are saying.

1. The Great Depression affected everyone to some degree. How were the people in the movie affected? How were the different socio-economic classes affected?
2.What struggles did James J. Braddock face throughout the movie? Did you like James Braddock? Why or why not?
3. Which part of the film was most important? Why?
4.What issues do people today deal with that are similar to those of the Braddock family? How are today's issues different? What sorts of new issues will our children face?

  1. The Great Depression of the 1930s was a serious economic depression in the whole world. It affected mostly America. The economic depression affected more the middle and lower class of society. Middle class started to live with no money and financial security. The situation of lower class was even harder because they were out of jobs and could not pay basic needs. However, upper class of society was not affected like middle and lower class. In the movie, the main character James Braddock was a successful boxer, but when the stock market crashed, he lost everything he had. He had no savings, but he had a big family with three children. They cannot even pay the electricity and they have a problem of lighting and heating. The other people in the movie who were middle and lower class were affected in a similar way. James Braddock had an injured hand but he had to work and earn money for his family. He worked on a hard job. He could not fight for a long time, so his carrier was finished. I like James Braddock because he is a strong character. He overcomes every difficulty. He does not give up and keeps going. I liked his spirit for life and I liked his boxing. His reflexes are very strong. And also he never gives up, in the movie when he fights his ribs were broken but he did not give up. I think the most important part of the film is he defeated the unstoppable Max Baer who is the world champion and who killed two people on the ring. When James Braddock defeated him, he earns respect and money and he got rid of being poor. That is why it is the most important part of the story. Lower socio-economic classes have financial problems. There are many unemployed people all over the world. However, today there are more issues which affect people’s lives deeply. These are problems like terrorism, racism and immigration. These issues affect all classes’ lives, because a group of rich people can get killed at a rich restaurant in Paris.

    1. Over all your paragraph have deep explanation. Especially you wrote about terrorism, racism and immigration as a big problems as The Great Depression issues. I couldnt think of those examples you give.

    2. Hey dude,
Good thinking but your comment was a little bit difficult to understand and had some mistakes actually. To begin with you say that the upper classes were not affected. And then you say that James Braddock had lost his savings. I think that he was an upper class by looking at his previous life style. So it affected them too. It is a little wrong to say that lower classes were affected so badly. They were poor, they were also poor after the stock market crashed. Still no offense dude need to earn points ;)

    3. Yankıcım,Paris connection was a good one, especially if we consider the recent explosions. Would have been better if you elaborated more on that though. you mentioned about "defeat" that takes place in the film. It is actually a good theme to talk about, good effort overall. Thanks.

  2. Cinderella Man” is a great movie that shows too much things about life during Great Depression. As we talked in the class, Great Depression surely affected everyone in same degree, but it didn’t cause same conditions for everyone. For people whose job is the only thing that they have, great depression caused really poor conditions. In the movie, Jimmy’ s job, his ability to fight is the only thing that brings money to his family. Due to this reality, when he lost his job, his family had miserable life conditions. On the contrary, people who were not risk-takers didn’t have bad conditions during that time.( I mean the people who guaranteed.) As we can easily see from the film, the coach of Jimmy didn’t have that much poor conditions. Although he lives in the same town, he doesn’t experience poor life conditions. He has a nice house and he does not seem like he's suffering. Maybe, he saved some money from the past . I mean, the effects of Great depression depends on the families. We can see hundreds of unemployed people who are suffering to get a job, but we can also see a nice house and happy families from the same place. Government didn’t really care the community but the citizens tried to help each other, that was one of the factors that reduced the effect of Great Depression for some of the citizens. James was one of the victims of Great Depression. After he lost his job, he and his family suffered; they couldn’t pay the bills, they had no electricity, they had no enough food, their children couldn’t get educated, their son got ill. But, none of them frustrated James. He had hope; he never felt ashamed; he struggled. Actually, he got power from the strong relationship between his family members. I believe that the positive spirit of Braddocks really helped him to be hopeful. I really liked James, because he is a hardworking man, helpful citizen, kindhearted dad and a trustful husband. Our world needs men like James! He is someone who lives life fully. The situation in the film was very important factor to make James a man like a man.The most important part of the film was the part that the coach of James comes with good news and tells him the (first) opportunity to have a fight. It’s very important, because that’s the turning point, after that event James won the match and all good things and opportunities came to him after that victory. If the coach couldn't arrange the match for him; if he didn’t have that first opportunity to fight, he could continue to work in the harbor, his children could got really ill and they could had worse conditions in their home. Today, there are many people who are living in the same conditions with Braddocks.Billions of men are unemployed, and they can’t bring enough money and food into their house. There are many people who are suffering on the streets and most of the governments don’t care about them.( just like Great Dep. Time) The only difference of today’s world is there are some foundations who try to help people who live in a bad manner; but it’s not a long-term solution for them .If these conditions don’t change, education opportunities for many children will decrease and the next generations of the poor families will be uneducated and won’t be helpful people for their world.Economic situation of the countries may come in a very bad position. The minimum wages are not being arranged logically and the future gives a message like if you have money, you are fine, but if you aren’t that rich, you are automatically taking a risk! In the future, most probably there won't be an opportunity which comes to us . Due to this we all have to make our lives opportunity for us, and the only way to do is trying our best today for tomorrow.

    1. I think you put your thoughts in a really good order. Everything is in its place. The only question mark I had was the first sentence's 'too much'.

    4. "Our world needs men like James!" totally agree :) Nice point to make actually, I also I admire his strength and determination. You underlined the significance of foundations today and that is a good point too. A sigh of some humanitarian actions I guess. Thoughtful post, thanks.

  3. Cinderella Man is a great story about a boxer named James J. Braddock. It shows how he rose from the difficulties of the Great Depression and achieved success at the end. the Great Depression wasn't something to be joked about. It was a serious problem in the 1930s. Rich or poor, well or unwell, everyone lost something from it. The wealthy businessman lost their savings, the average fell even lower, the taxes increased with the decreased wages. Jim used to have s great life. In the times of Great Depression though, he started to lose money and his family's conditions got worse and worse. He owed lots of money to lots of people. Him and hiss wife tried to hold on hope. But at some point Mae was forced to send their children to somewhere safe until their condition got better, since she was afraid of their health and safety. Even his friend Joe who had a very well financial support was degraded into a bad state. Some of the highest people stayed as they were with still a big loss on their hands..
Jim had to be chosen by other businessman to work somewhere and earn money. With all the working he did, he only got low wages so he still wasn't able to pay the taxes. Taking care of his family was also really hard on those days. One time he had to collect money from Joe's office to get back his children. With all this bad luck like his broken hand, he wasn't able to fight well on the ring, therefore weren't able to get much money for his family. With all this happening, I admire how he was able to rise from that situation. He never gave up because he had a family that depended on him. He tried to be as selfless as possible. He was an inspiration for other sufferers of the Great Depression.
I think one of the most important parts were when they showed us the inner struggle of his wife Mae. It gave us a great insight on the effects of Great Depression on the civilians . If it weren't for that, we couldn't sympathize with the people of that time. In my opinion, she was kind of a symbol for the citizens and the people of the time. Of course it's not the only thing that's important. IT's just one of many important factors of this movie's success.
Sadly, even if the Great Depression is over, there are still families like the Braddock's who have lots of difficulties. Joblessness rate is still pretty high in some of the countries, with the growing population. It might even rise higher in these next years. The migrant workers still go around, searching for a job so they can feed themselves and their families. We have a big difference between the middle class and the low class. Their children are sometimes uneducated since they need to provide the family with money. The money is often not enough, they can't buy medicines when someone is sick. The easiest illnesses that can be won against can cause deaths. The living conditions are pretty low for the lower class. People have difficulty just to survive.
Different people have different problems right now. Some group of people strive to give the best education they can to their child while others worry about keeping them alive. We students constantly worry about our carriers and future. Right now if you manage to enter a good school, we feel like we can be anything we want to. The issues we have now are intellectual as well as political. Our countries have started to lead a cat-and-dog life these days. If this continues, our children might live in a world of war as well as us.
The Great Depression might have been a tremendously harmful event to America and the world, but alas, this depression was always there. That was just a turning point, a knot from all those build-ups that appeared in the history and made a name. I think the real depression is all around us. In every face we look in, in every gaze that we're too ashamed to meet. We just try to run away from it. Great Depression is one of the historical moments that brought humanity really close to this depression and despair so much that we had no other choice but to face it.

  4. “You might be poor, your shoes might be broken, but your mind is a palace.” Frank McCourt. Cindirella man is more than a film for me. It is not only a story or a film it is sign of success. He was the man who symbolized the people which are not socialy and economicly good in those days of great depression times. On that ring he showed to people that they live in a uneasy conditions but what happens he has the soul of povert and the family. He won all those matchs because when he was a champion, he didn't know the hard conditions can everybody face with. After the great depressin and the all the bad luck he experienced, tought him lots of details about life. There is connection between poverty and family. The awkward connection is the they are the begging level of the life. When you live in poverty you learn everything to survive also when you also have family almost all your goal is to feed your family. This experienced him a lot and, in one of his matches he was almost to knockout, but he remembered the day when his wife takes their children to her parents. This memory made him to turn back to game and won it. Poverty is different than everything. When you do not have to eat anything you can beg money from your old friends. This something very disappointing for that person and the other people. He also mentioned this situation when they ask "What is changed, now what are you fighting for" his answer was "Milk" This shows that nothing is for big houses or fancy things it is just for food. Also for me the most important part of the film is the " Milk" part. This part gives the main idea of the film. The title of the film is "Cinderella man" and it is related to the story cindirella. There are two connections the first one is also cinderella is a poor girl and their sisters do not like her. Then one night with a little luck, she goes to a party and at the end she marries with the prince. The thing what happens to Jim is same he was in bad conditions, but then suddenly he rises to ring again and he becomes the champion. The other connection is the shoes he wears before his first match after long time. Because he sold of his everything he does not have anything to wear. His counselor gives someones red shoes to him. This is also related with the story of cinderella. In those days people are also struggling with the same problem, and it will be for the end of the world because someone always has to be bigger than other one and this makes people in different social and econmic ways. This not preventable. But ı am always grateful and I belive that we live in a great country and those days will pass and I hope this poverty will be less than in these days.

  5. In the movie “cindrella man”there is a boxer who wins his every fight. Russell Crowe is the main character in the movie. He plays in the movie as James J. Broddock. He was a champion but some problems happened in that time which is Great depression. In great depression people are in really bad situations except rich people. He does not have job in great depression times that is why he cannot pay his house payment. After that his wife sends their children because she wants to protect them. These thing are the problems that James has. I really like James, the reason that ı like James is he faces with a lot of problems but he still does not give up. The best scene for me is the fight scene which James turn back winning. He is determined because he does not give up and turns back to be champion. Nowadays, there are not problems like in great depression times. I remember that 3 or 5 years ago there were a lot of job problems in Turkey. In the movie we can see that families are affected from unemployement in that time. James even cannot pay his payment of house. Nowadays, unemployement is not important for our children for us the main problems are global issues and in the future our problems will be these things.

    2. I though the same thing about Jimmy. His determination was what made me fall for him as well. He also influences many other like him in the story. Am I right?

  6. I liked the movie. In great depression times, people were in bad conditions and it is too hard for people. Families had to send their childrem to another places. Earning money was so hard, you need to have chance to work somewhere. People couldn't find woods and they stole it from the streets, billboard. and I think the rich people don't care about the poor ones. Poor people had to sell their objects in the house. People lived in small uncomfortable houses. They don't have much money to buy food and people have debts to other people. And the goverment don't do anything to rescue from this situations. In the movie, James had to work because he has a family and he had to work for his family but work conditions were hard and he couldn't find job . And he was a boxer. He didn't give up. He broke his hand and he still works in marina. His child stole sausages in the butchery. The most important thing was money for him because he wants that his family live in better condition. He doesn't care about the other boxer because he always put his heart to the match and he wins the match for his family. Thats why ı like him. The most important part was the second chance that he got. There was a boxer which didnt lose any match. There was only person who will do match with him. He was james. And he won this match and get 250 dollar and he pay his debt and he still works in the marina. In our country, some people are poor and the living conditions are so hard for them because of the weather. I am really sad. In Turkey, some syrian people in the same condition they sell their children as same as in great depression. Todays problems are terrorism unemployment. And ı want tot talk about why the name of movie is cindrella man. Generally james is poor and he got a one chance and become a rich man in the story cindrella is poor and with a chance she goes to party and prince falls in love with her. The other one is he sold everything and he got a red shoes and he won the match and his fate turn to good.

  8. The Great Depression years are the most miserable years for who were poor. Those years affected everyone in some degree. If we can name it, poor people were trying to survive. On the other side rich people were living their lives in a perfect conditions. The Great Depression years not only affected economy. People were psychologically down and families were collapsing someway, because they had to send their children to be able to live and to give them better conditions. James J. Braddock is a boxer. He was taking care of his family by boxing, but when he lost his job everything changed for them. His son a little boy steal a salami, because he thought his parents will send him. The Great Depression years made a boy think in that way, so as I said everyone affected in physically too. James did everything he was not the man as he used to be as boxer, but put everything to be able take care. He biff with a broken hand by thinking his wife and his children many times. After he had a another chance to box, he risked his life but at the end he is the man who brought hope to everyone. I really liked him, when I was watching every second starting from first ten I cried. He really affected me by heart. He didnt even broke his promise to his son, when his wife send the children. He bring them home by begging and putting away his pride to his past boss and the other rich people. He risked his life for his family, he challenge Max Baer who killed two people by boxing. The most part that I liked that affected me really by heart was when he biff with a broken hand and after that by working in a other job with that broken hand. Actually the other part was when the children came back and the look I saw in the James's eyes. İn these two parts I couldnt which is the best, because they are really made me cry. In this century we have people like James J. Braddock as a human, as a dad, as a husband and as a friend. Also we do have people who is trying to survive. In this century people still suffering. An example Syrian people they came Turkey because of war that they have in their country but they dont deserve it no one deserves a suffering life. Also there are more people who are surviving as in The Great Depression years people. Only difference now people have credit but it is also not long term thing to them to be comfortable. Everytime rich people will have better conditions this is the world's law unfortunately.

  9. Cinderella Man is a wonderful film about James J. Braddock who is a great boxer and a perfect father. The movie is mostly about the struggle he had during The Great Depression years in America. This movie clearly shows the diffuculties that people had in America those times. Everybody without exception lost something important in their lives in The Great Depression. Rich people learnt how to live like a lower class men or women and poor people even got into more trouble. Some people sent their children away because they could not feed them or keep them healthy. For example, in some part of the movie James J. Braddock’s wife had to send her children away because they were getting ill in the winter time and their house was too cold because they did not have enough Money for the electricity. The other heartbreaking scene was when men were at the gate of the custom who were trying to be chosen to carry some heavy sacks from ships. In other words, people suffered extremely awful during The Great Depression years in America. Old-young, poor-rich, children-men, no matter what they were, they were trying to hold on their troublesome lives in a pitiful way as we see in the movie.
James J. Braddock had many kinds of troubles in the movie. He had to fight even though he broke his hand or slats, he had to be strong for his family to continue their lives, he had to be patient to the dark times that they were having, he had to see one of his best friend’s death and lastly and most importantly he had to choose between living by getting more money which was a great opportunity for him to turn back to his great days or dying as other two boxers did previously in the final box match in the Cinderella Men. I like him very much because he was the symbol of hope and determination in his town. He was not only a simple boxer. The decisions he made allowed him to live a great life with his lovely family after the terrible days he struggled with.
I think the most important part was the final match he had with the “murderer” boxer. I cried when he won the first place. The tension of the movie pushed my limits in that scene. It was the most important scene because it was going to show me the future of him and his family and also the future of other hopeful people in his town. “Hope is the only thing stronger than fear” says Suzanne Collins in one of her successful series. That is a completely correct phenomenon in real life. People in the movie was scared because of the troubles they had, yet there was even a powerful feeling, hope, which helped them to hold on life when they see the determination James J. Braddock had. That is why the final scene was extremely significant.
There are some similarities between today’s issues and The Great Depression. There is still poverty in some parts of the world such as Africa. There is still a huge difference between a lower class person’s life and a rich person’s life. There is still an inequality between people in economic issues. I think the world is going into somewhere which has an uncertain end. Without revolution in every issue including people’s awful minds, there will be no solution to it. A big war will begin in immediate future which will prepare the end of the humanity in this world if nothing changes.

  10. "Cindrella Man" is a great movie which reflects the issues and difficulties during the Great Depression. The Great Depression was the greatest economic failure during 1930's that America has ever been faced with. The Great Depression affected everyone. A lot of people lost their jobs, families and honors. During this period people couldn't even buy their essential needs like food or clothing, so the started to steal what they needed. Rate of the people who drinks alcohol and who smokes increased, so did the crime rate. The crises impacted ever economic class, but the ones who works for another person got impacted most. The film is about a boxer named James J. Braddoc who is a great fighter at the beginning of the film, but the audience see that he is not the same fighter after the 1930's and after he breaks his hand he is forced to give up boxing. He troubles about finding a job. In the meantime his son steals food from the butcher, but James returns the food to the butcher. He is trying to get selected by a job giver every day, but the money he gets won't be enough to pay the bills and their electricity get cut off and they get sentence to the cold, so his wife thinks sending the kids will be better for kids, but James won't accept that his home is breaking apart. He gets money from the people who he knows, and he pays the bills and gets the kids back. His manager, Joe, arranges one last fight to James, but he wins the fight so Joe decides to get back James the the rink, even he needs to buy his last furniture. James gets started to win every single fight that he gets in , and his victories leads James to his biggest fight which is with the world champion. During this fight James struggles a lot, but at the end this fight shows his glorious come back.
I really like and appreciate James. I think he is a reliable and honest man who is trying not to disappoint his family.
I think most important part was the part that James watches Max killing the man he is fighting because it was the lart that James could have withdraw, but he knows that he needs to fight for his family and from now on for that man who is killed by Max.
I think today people still struggling with the money. Everyone is trying earn money to support their family. Theree are economic classes, and because of that there are people who are really poor or really rich. There is no equality in any society. I believe our children will still struggling with the money, but with more technological development they will have different economic classes, but I think the biggest problem that our children will face is the unemployment. The world is going to a technological period, and I think technolagical devices will take the place of human, because the business owners won't need to pay to the technological devices as much as they pay to the workers.

  11. This movie "Cinderella Man" is about a family who have gone through The Great Depression which was an economical and a social colapse which affected America in a terrible way and put people in many difficult times. People had so difficult times facing hunger, lack of money and electricty and also became unemployed. The richest people of America even affected because of the economical problems which the great depression caused but they did not affected as the way poor people affected. Most people nearly lost all of their stuff and money as James J. Braddock and his family in the movie "Cinderella Man". He was a famous boxer and his family was wealthy in the beginning of the movie but then the great depression happened, they lost all of their stuff, they could not even buy food. He also lost his job because of breaking his ankle. He tried to find a job and wanted to protect his family and pay the bills because his family were getting worse day by day. He worked and earned money, he was also wanted for box matches again because of his success. He won many matches and most importantly the biggest match which made him became the champion and earn a lot of money. It made his family wealthy again. I like him a lot because he took a great care of his family and he is a protective father. I think the most important part of the film was where his friend offered him to earn 250 dollars from a box match and he won it in order to protect his family and he paid their bills. Nowadays in most of the parts in the world people are getting along by their money which is enough for their survival but surely in some of the countries people still face hunger, drought and lack of money but generally people are fine because a collapse like great depression has not happened. Todays issues are mostly about political stuff , government, managerial system ,the relationships between countries, the problems caused by terror organisations, blasts and people's death which are the signs of an upcoming war which we wish not to happen. Children also face these problems because they will be the generation who will be affected by the problems in future.

Your opinion about JJB was him being a protective father I guess. This is the way you see him. Different POV tho. That's a good think that you can see him being a father because everyone would see him like a champ who did not give up and got the title! Nays

  12. The movie “Cinderella Man” is an illumanating and important film. The movie reflected The Great Depression years in America very well. In the movie people were affected by being worklessness because of The Great Depression. All of the citizens was trying to find a job and have money to live together with their family. Even the businessmen were lost their money, there were a economic collapes in America those years which is 1930s. James J. Braddock was one of that citizens that tries to keep his family together in the movie. James J. Braddock was having trouble about gaining money and having a job, he lost money and become unemployed. He had difficulties in making his family strong in economic way because of The Great Depression. He was gaining money by being boxer but unfortunetly he broked his hand, also he was getting older so he had to stop being boxer. By the time he started to look for a job in the seaport but that job was not enough to feed his family. He also promised to not send their children. After some hard times they had James friend Joe provide him a new competition and his succes in that competition helped him gaining money. So he started being boxer again and he was very successful. This achievement of him took him to the first place of boxers. The reason why I impressed by James J. Braddock was because he was trying so hard to have money in a honest way. He believed himself and his family. Maybe he was not that strong in physical way but he won the competition and have the money because of the power and hope of their loyalty, their hearts were always together. I believe that he was the symbol of hope. I think that the most important part of the movie was that where he get the chance of boxing again and his rising in this sport because he showed not to give up even through adversity. In nowadays there are also families who have the same issues which is not having enough money tol ive that is why they look for a job or panhandle on the street. But in those times it was the biggest problem accordingly to our times. Now people have problems except being unemployed like violence between children, having drugs, poverty, etc. I think our country and world will be mostly face the problems of political conflict, health problems in the future.

  13. As a matter of fact, I think that this was one of the best movies I have ever seen. The movie called ‘‘Cinderella Man’’ is based on a boxer’s life called James J. Braddock in which we see that he lives in poverty because of The Great Depression unlikely to his previous normal life. So the events in the movie are happening in The Great Depression times. First of all, during the Great Depression, everybody was affected in a negative way, and James Braddock was one of them who lost all his wealth because of the Great Depression. In the movie, lots of people including James, go to the docks in order to have a chance to work there and make little amounts of money, so it shows what and economic crisis they have those times. Not only did it affect people economically, but it also changed people’s life style along with their psychology. Most of them couldn’t live as they did before, and some of them were gone crazy even if that is not one of the affects that were shown in the movie. James, as a father of three children suffers a lot too, but he gets a chance to fix that problem by fighting again. During that time, he has so many problems that his wife even gives their children to her sister to take care of them, or he can’t work because there is no job. However, I like James because he is a very good person and he doesn’t do illegal things in order to make money even if his children’s lives are the case. When his son steals something for the house, James tells him that they will not steal anything even if they have nothing left. In addition, he is a very eager man opposite to his final opponent Max who he beats. Besides all these, the most important parts of the movie were when he beats his opponents after remembering some things in his head because it proves to people once more that we can achieve anything by being determined and by believing, and that’s why this can be one of the themes in the movie. Another thing is that there are still things that are similar to what is happening in the movie. For example, there are still people who are so poor that they can’t even pay their bills like the Braddock family. There are still people who are unemployed, and there are still people who will do anything to get a job. The only difference is the amount of these people which is why the governments don’t care about them much. There can be another crisis in our children’s time as well. How can we know? Even a war can be powerful enough to destroy our country or other countries. That is why we must be prepared for everything.

    Great Depression and Cinderella man

As we all discussed about TGD, all of us have some information about how the society was effected. Jimmy to Joey, everyone suffered from it. Jimmy had to give up on everything just because he put all his money to stock market. When stock market crashed, he lost all his money. His money was enough for his grandchildren, yet he could not spend any of it. Jimmy and his family had to move to an house to underground with no sunshine. About Joey, he had to sell his stuff too. All he wanted to do was to put Jimmy on the ring back. So if we come to a resolution, in TGD times, even the richest guy lost his money. The socio-economic classes of the era was not different from one another but before that, the poor people remain poor, so people who had some money was effected by TGD. Jimmy Braddock was the heart of al lot of people. When did this happen? After he started winning again. But what was he doing before that? He was struggling to work in the docks for a few dollars with a broken hand if he was selected. For me the turning point for him was the milk part and the part that his wife sent the children away. This was the turning point because he promised his son that they will never send them. He had to take care of them. Thanks to Joey, he was able to put him on a match. He also gave money for him to train. These two people made a lot of sacrifices in the movie. Jimmy never gave up. He always believed that something would happen and it happened. This is the part that I like about him. The most important part of the movie was the part that Jimmy had the second chance. I am not saying that he did not deserve it but he was lucky. Unline anyone in his era, he was a lucky guy. If I was him, I would be thankful for all the chances I got. People around him helped to bring him to his success. In today, it is not like 1930’s but still there is poverty worse than Jimmy and his family suffered. A lot of babies die because people cannot keep them warm. This would not be enough for people who could’ve helped but they are doing nothing. The blood of those babies are not on the hands of the people who couldn’t keep them warm. It’s on us that we did not do anything.

  15. This week our task was to watch a movie called Cinderella Man because our topic was about the 1930s great depression and we even worked on groups, researched and did presentation, made class notes to share with our friends, finally an open note quiz. I think all of that research made me understand about this extreme era in the united states where people were living in such bad living conditions despite of the american dream. The movie starts before the crash and shows a match people laughing, eating, drinking.J. Braddock giving signatures and getting more than a thousand dollars for a match and he goes home with a big smile on his face. Then the movie suddenly shows us the crash and instantly you feel an earhquake because the reality hit you so hard. The Braddock family was of couse hit too. You see struggle everyday, pain to survive. Jimmy as the leader fights hard to be able to feed his family, all of the responsibility he has, he tries to find a job as a worker in the dock. But the thing is, every man tried to do the same they all waited in line begging to work their butts off just to get a very very small amount of Money which for most of them isn't even enough. But on the other side you see Jimmy in New York poor, exhausted, hungry walking pass people dressed in gowns, head pieces, expensive jewelry...Eating anything they want whenever they feel like they are hungry and there is Jimmy not eating that little piece of meat because she gave it to her daughter when he has an important match to make. So the classes in the society had very different perspectives, so different that I thought he went to another country for gods sake. People like Jimmy had struggled a long time surviving. Jimmy worked wherever he could find a job, if it was boxing so be it he will go to the match with his head held high when his stomach makes nousy noises because he is hungry. his best hand, the right being broken. His wife and children waiting for him at home. His children, so afraid that one of them steals meat from the market after seeing his friend leaving town because his parents said they didn't had any Money to feed him. However dispite all of this Jimmy is the real deal. I personally love him a lot. He doesn't whine because he is working his butt off, he doesn't get tired when he is exhausted to be able to carry the responsibilities he has such as taking care of the family. He is funny, honorable, determined, loving, caring, got all the support from people around which I think is pretty self-explanatory. And he did not ever give up. Thats why he survived and that why I love him. I also think that the most important scene on my opinion was influenced on by the power that Jimmy had. I really liked Jimmy in the press conferene telling people about his life. Usually people who gives interviews are rich and famous but he didnt try to hide what he has been through and how difficult it was. He showed people that he is one of them, fighting for milk. He worked hard and he struggled but he was always thankful for what he has as well. Even though this movie focused on the 1930s, still its possible to see these alike struggles in nowadays however it is a bit different. Obviously medicine, technology ans knowledge increased a lot and now there are so much more opportunities but that doesnt mean it makes it easier and lifts some of the weight from peoples shoulders. Now some people are so greedy and selfish and sometimes you wonder how will any human being for any possible reason can do such a thing? Technology and knowledge helps the world to improve a lot but this time it is the HUMANS who destroy everything, the earth, natyre, animals, children, breaking apart families, killing hundreds . Poverty, political conflicts war.... I wonder if people survived and did what they did at that level of opportunities, technology etc. imagine what we as humas could benefit the World to make it a better place.

  16. In those years there were two kind of people. Rich and poor. During the great depression the rich people became very rich and poor ones were really poor. All people had a chance of getting poor and the people who did not know about how to live in poor conditions, they were elected and mostly those people struggled the most or even died. The reason why is that they cannot get used to that poor life. So all people affected in harmful way. J. Braddock was one of the rich person in those times at first. He won all his matches. He was the champion. He never experienced poor conditions. After a while great depression year came and also he started to lose his matches because of his broken hand. He had to quit from boxing. When he quit he had a hard time to find a job because of great depression and also he did not have an idea about how life as a poor person was like. At those time lots of the people are jobless so all of them tries to find job at the same time. Also in the USA they have dust bowl problem too so in a less time millions people were jobless. Those are the struggle that J. Braddock had. I like him because he shows us how difficult to live in those times. When I was watching the film I really understand the difficulties. When he fight with another because of people offer him a money. After he won that match everything changes in his entire life. He was poor but suddenly he got rich and also it was the climax of the film. Because of these reasons this part is important. In Syria and other Muslim country those great depression conditions are seeing. Lots of people die, the country economy is collapse. People go to other countries. Generally rich people or luck people can go to other countries. While they are going to other countries a few of them die. Turkey is the example o fthis. In west those people who come from Muslim countries, they try to go to europe and at those times few of them die. Other people who chose or must stay in their own country they live same life as in the film. I think those problem coming from east to west so in the future same thing happen to our country. It means that our children is not safe.

  17. One of the most emotional and insightful movies I have ever seen. This movie is really a book which shows us how hard life had been for many during the most difficult era in the US. Jimmy Braddock proves that physical strength is not all that matters. He, for sure, will be one of my role models from this day on. As mentioned, the movie gave great insight about the great depression era. What I observed about the impacts the great depression had on the different socio-economic classes is that the poor people before the market crash became even worse in terms of poverty. People that had lots of money but had them invested in shares of companies or banks, lost their money unexpectedly. Those who had loads of money aside remained rich in my point of view. Socially all classes had to take some punches, too. Families had struggles staying together, children were sent to relatives that lived in better conditions, and as we know they were even offered to other people. Due to poverty, the lack of food, people were misled by these conditions to steal food and many more... Jimmy j. Braddock had to deal with some serious struggles too. After his license canceled, he had to find other jobs. He worked at a dock alternately to boxing at most times during the movie. He had to fed three children with an income of 5.77 $ per day. If I did like Braddock? To be honest, I don’t. I loved him. He, for me is someone to be admired because of his will to fight for his family as a whole is something really valuable. One of my biggest dreams is to have a great family, too. This makes me like him even more. He was seen as a boxer that fights for the New Jersey folks, especially for the poor. He was a great hope source for them but he is the same for me as well. If life tries to knock me down I will remember the Bulldog. The most important part of the movie for me was when he realized what he was fighting for and decided to go on and not give up for his family. Sure there are struggles like the ones displayed in the movie still ongoing. Like the refugees right next to us which are in desperate search of a safe life for them and their families or the economically- in critic situation Greece where unemployment boomed and the amount of money given out per day are limited. Just like the great depression era. The issues are just slightly different. We ignore them more than we did in the past I believe but that’s all in my point of view. Our children will approximately encounter many struggles which I wouldn’t just limit with economic or social struggles. In the future, if ongoing like this, they will have no earth to live in, in near future.

  18. From the director Ron Howard, Cinderella Man is a touching movie for every kind of people. The life of a boxer, who is from the Great Depression time, had displayed in a harrowing way. In the Great Depression, people were unable to find jobs, a place to live, or even a slice of bread to eat. It led them to suffer in an unbearable way. In the movie, the main character James J. Braddock was dealing with more than one issues. He and his wife couldn't find enough money to pay the fees, and because of that, their electric had been shot down, in fact, it was the reason why their children got sick and needed to move in to their relatives in order to live a better life. Braddock gave them a promise about getting them back, and worked hard as much as he could to keep his promise. Another issue was about getting enough food. Their food wasn't enough for them even though they tried hard to earn money. In the Great Depression, nearly everyone had affected from the economic collapse, though, the level of it differed from people to people. Some started to earn less and some didn't even change a bit. In the movie, Braddock's boss had displayed as a kind of person who has a hunger for money. Even though he was wealthier than many of them, he tried other techniques to earn more of it. James J. Braddock was a strong character. He didn't know the word "unfeasible". At the beginning, he didn't have much other than his family, but at the end, he had everything he wanted. That is why I adored this character. His behaviors had thrilled me, and had strengthened my faith in me. He made me believe I could do anything if I wanted to. In my opinion, the most important part of the movie was the end. The scene had determined the future of the Braddock family, plus, it caused the most enthusiastic part of all. Our children may find food, shelter, or job. But the new generations is raised by new toys, electronic devices, and so on. Their covetousness might be the reason of their end too.

  19. The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930’s (Wikipedia). During that time unemployment, crime rate, alcoholism, stress increased. In the movie that is Cinderella Man is based on affects of the great depression. James Jim Braddock who is Russell Crowe is the main character. He was rich, famous, happy dad, husband and boxer at the beginning of the movie, but then he lost all of his wealth and had hard time to pay his bills, buy food, warm up, and find a job. He owned a taxi stand in New York and some stakes, before the Great Depression but the income decreases. Also, he had hard time to find a box match and if he had, he lost it. So, he tried to found a new job in harbor. He got through the all-bad times with honesty, honor and hard working. For my opinion, it makes him likable. Also, I think one of the most important scenes is at the beginning of the movie, after he turned back at home with over eight thousand dollars from the box match that he won. He went his bedroom, took of his watch and put it on the cloakroom. After few seconds, next scene started with decay furniture and conversation with his wife about not paying bills. It shows that how people live affected by the Great Depression. At first, they were rich and happy but then they couldn’t buy even milk. Every class was affected. Rich one became poor and poor ones became poorer. They were trying to find a job to live in normal conditions. The less money became more important and they started to care every cent of it. If we compare the Great depression times at the America and the now time in the Turkey we cannot say that there are lots of difference. People still have financial problems, unemployment and high paid services like health. Rich ones are very rich and poor ones are very poor. There aren’t any middle classes at Turkey. Elders, adults, children and babies die from not having enough income sources, low worth of government services. That’s make me think about how Turkey’s live conditions similar to the Great Depression’s live conditions. I just find one difference that is at the Great Depression every social media shows the truth but now in Turkey, media tries to hide every truth like everything is okay.

    1. Great analysis on Turkey on class differences. I believe (will be very marxist) the less the size of the middle class, the bigger is the inequality. "Every class was affected" totally agree! But although everyone was affected humans don't learn certain lessons from history. Good reflection dear, great job.

  20. “In all of the history of the boxing game you find no human interest story to compare with the life narrative of James J Braddock…” The Cinderella Man is the film that gives many information about the great depression. I really like the film because when is see the events I feel them. In the movie the major character is James Braddock, is the father of the poor family, In great depression times parents send their children because they can’t give enough food. In great depression time people lived in very bad condition they didn’t find enough food and work or wood . The goverment didn’t give job to all poor people everyday day choosed 7 or 10 people from the poor people. The great depression was affected every people in different ways like in the movie James’s was a famous and rich boxor and in great depression times he affected in the way that paying bills or finding food his kids. And his friend or coach he was affected to he sold his furnitures. I love the character James because he is ambitious and he puts his heart on the ring every match he take power from his family that makes hima perfect father and boxor. He always Works in the movie for taking care of his family. He thinks his family more than himself. That’s why I liked him a lot. And the part which I liked is the coming back match when he fights he sees his family in his eyes and he wins the match. Today syrians lives in bad contitions . They came our country in 2 years ago. They live in the little cottages like 6 7 person this is so bad Turkish people don’t give any work to them because they don’t like syrian people. Lot’s of teenager syrian girls having sex with old and dirty people in Turkey because this is the last cure of getting money. When I look at the streets I always see a little kids try to find a food from the trashes.

  21. The Great Depression was an era which had an impact on America in the worst ways. The life quality of people decreased and in some ways it was even impossible to mention about the “quality” od people’s lives. These affects of the Great depression were shown in the movie cindrella man through a small family who live in U.S.A in those days and who try to survive in those days, without falling apart. The protagonist in the film is the father of the family and he is a boxer. He fights for money and he used to be very rich in the beginnings of film. Later the bankrupt happens and money becomes something very hard to find. While he was earning thousands of dollars in one night, he becomes a person counting cents to pay his bill. Because of poverty almost finds hımself in a situation where he can not afford to have children anymore. What was obvious in the film is that the poor people became more poor but the interesting thing was that even the rich people lost almost everything they had. There was a scene where the audience saw that even Cindrella man’s manager (who had very good living conditions ) lived in an empty house selling everything he had. So overall it’s possible to say that all the socio-economic classes were affected by the great depression in the most rigorous ways. Through the movie James tries to keep his family together, afford the essential things for their living but most importantly, he tries to keep boxing. He becomes the hope the poor people, and he doesn’t want to let anyone down. I do like James Braddock because he is a determined and an honest man. Even in the worst situations where other people act like devils, he continues walking in his path, never crossing his own characteristic lines. I believe he is very trustable and honest because he doesn’t steal and he works as much as he can. In my opinion the part where James’s son stole some meat from the butcher was very important. Because at that point we all understood who James really is, and I’m pretty sure anyone who watches that film would start to like him at that point. Becuase inspite of all the fear that he has about the future, we see how honored he is as a person. Today we deal with similar issues but in more simple forms. There are a lot of problems about the government and the level of poverty and unemployment is increasing steadily yet we’re acting different then James. People in these days steal, swindle, cheat. We can say that they do almost everything to earn money from the easy ways.Humanity is starting to disappear. People doesn’t care about human values and his creates more danger than everything else. In the future what I assume is that our children will be facing with harder situations. The relations between humans will lessen and more likely disappear. Everything will be about money and degree. Hierarchy will become the legislation of the world. While even thinking about these is scary, it’s more scary to think that human kind may appreciate their history one day such as Great Depression days.

    1. You are right, it is most of the time keeping the values in tact, and not to budge in the face of a difficulty. Good remark also made on how humanity started rotting. I completely agree with you, trying my best to be optimisitc about the future:)

  22. In the movie ''Cinderella Man'' we can see how the Great Depression affected people. Our main character is James J. Braddock, who was a succesful boxer who has a family and lived wealthy. Suddenly, we see the situation Braddock and his family find themselves into during the Great Depression years. They become poor and lose their house. Braddock's boxing manager didn't become very poor, but he lost money too. A lot of people at that time were sending their children to relatives who can at leat feed them. Many families fell apart because of the financial problems.
I likes Braddock. He shows himself as a man who has principles. He is honest and responsible. He loves his children and his wife. During the Great Depression Braddock never steals, and teaches his children not to steal. He works very hard, not paying attention to his pain, because he needs to feed the family and pay the bills. He puts himself in danger during the box but fortunately he is very lucky. After he earns money at the end of the movie, Braddock family starts to live easier again. They buy a house, raise their children, James starts a company. He also fights in 2. World War which shows that he is not only caring for his family, but also for his country. During the hard times James J. Broddock didn't lose himself. He stayed strong. I can say that he achieved the American Dream (good family, a house, enought money) by working hard, being intelligent enough, working very very hard. He also had fortune. And the most important - he lived morally.
The most important part of the movie was the James's fight with Max. Everybody in the movie (and me as a watcher) were nervous. James's wife Mae was scared for his life because Max was known to kill two of his opponents during the fight. Everybody in the city listened to the fight, many people prayed in the church. The fight was very important because it decided the future of James and his family. Especcially the moment where James remembered the boxing match where Max killed his opponents was very important. He predicted Max's next move and saved his life. James won and everybody was very cheerful. He earned a lot of money and won World Heavyweight Champion title.
Today many people face hunger even though we can not see them. In the third world countries, people face hunger, diseases, anti sanitary, lack of human right protection. In developed countries people also have problems, both economic and social. I think that as years passed, human life became both more diffucult and easy. We found vaccines and cure for illnesses, made media and internet, human force is not that much in need as it was fifty years ago. Many problems still exist, such as unemployment, lack of mediciene, wars, terrorism, validating human rights, and not thingking about the future of people on this planet. But also population rised, the climate and ecology changed in a bad way. I don't even guess what kind of difficulties will our children have. In my opinion even if the difficulties are same for everybody, how we face them is different and that is what is important. Our generation needs to start thinking not only about today but also about the future, by finding solution to the current problems (climate change, migration crisis, uncurable for now ilnesses, personal development issues).

    1. James is a great figure, totally! I agree that no matter how horrible the situations were he remained in one piece and tried to lead a life without shifting gears. Good post Deniz, thanks.

  23. Umut Barıs Ozen

“Maybe I understand, some, about having to fight. So you just remember who you are... you're the Bulldog of Bergen, and the Pride of New Jersey, you're everybody's hope, and the kids' hero, and you are the champion of my heart, James J. Braddock” Mae Braddock. Cinderella Man is the memorable film that I watched in my life. It is not just a film, it is the symbolism of The Great Depression era’s economically and socially issue, and also its the hope of inside of the bleakness. “Cinderella Man” showed us what happened on that years, 1930. The poverty, mercy of the God, determination of the labourer, stability, standing up to the difficulties for his family, undaunted, these are the words that build up this dazzling film. On these years, banks are collapsed, the value of money increased, so many people couldn’t pay their debt so they couldn’t provide their essential needs. Due to this depression, some segment of the public faced to the hunger, lack of money, food and electricity, some people revolt to the government. The economy getting stagnant, due to lack of money nobody was buying something so it means nobody was selling anything. People in the movie are tried to adapted to that new life style. Because there is very less electric, food, and the other essential needs. In “Cinderella man” the director showed that very fantastically. At beginning of the movie, it showed the lifestyle of Braddock’s family lifestyle. It was extraordinarily perfect and as rich as a classic American rich family. Unfortunately, the great depression affected every segment of the public atrociously. Most people nearly lost all their stuff and money as James J. Braddock and his family in the movie "Cinderella Man". James J. Braddock is a man who is a undeterred boxer. Ability to fight is the only issue that brings money to his family. In the great depression year, he and his family became very poor but they was still honourable. James J. Braddock broke his hand wile he was fighting but he was still tried his best to feed his family. Due to the less income, his house’s electric is shut down, have to add water to the milk… I really like James’s determination. In his life he fights for his family. He always has a reason to fight that’s why I think always win all the match. The most important part of this film I think, when the Jim said that you are going to fight with Max Baer who is the heavyweight box champion and killed 2 people while he was fighting them, he didn’t give that opportunity up. He said it is my fortune and I am going to fight and win that man. I think the most important part is that one because the director showed the dominant trait of James which is “never give up, keep going!” At the Great Depression time, the government organized a system that can people get money if they need for and then they became in debt. But now people can easily get money from government but they need to pay more money for each passing day. The truth is earning money and feeding family are still very hard to overcome. So there are still poor people around the World, these people are like a salt inside of the soup, and the soup is “citizens” and the government is the man who drinks that soup who absorb all the money that citizens have. This is like a cycle. At the great depression years everyone thinks that the government helped but they didn’t they just tried to prevent the collapse of their empire. Money is like a cancer inside of the human beings. It is just set against the people because of the greed.

    1. Dear Umut, I believe you deeply felt and perfectly understood what this film tries to show us. In my opinion overall you did a good job yet when I look at your comments details I see that you've mentioned about your personal thoughts more then necessary, especially for the first question. I would've wanted to see more fact about the great depression. I also want to add that I really like your simile which is abot people, salt and soup. I also believe that the government is the one who absorbs all the wealth of people.

  24. First of all, this movie is one of a kind about giving the feeling of those hard times. I though that I was living in that time not Russell Crowe. Great Depression affected people in a such bad way that people made movie’s about those times. Great depression times were so hard and people had no money, nothing to wear, nowhere to stay etc. So people started working on whatever they can find. For example, Russell Crowe worked with a broken hand -i know its dram of the movie-. People were sending their children away because of they couldn’t take care of them and they were begging for help from the government. And as we know, The Great Depression affected everyone in a bad way but for some it wasn’t that bad. In the movie rich people went to normal or stayed as they were while poor people went worse. In the movie James J. Braddock suffered a lot from poorness. In first he was rich but then he went to poor and he almost lost everything. He faced injury, stealing -his child- and sickness –his children-. I really liked James J. Braddock because of his ambition and consistency. He was so ambitious and responsible that he started boxing again in that age and won all of the matches that he competed. In last match he even risked his life inorder to take of his family in a better condition. To talk about his consistency, he promised his children about never sending him away. When his wife did, he went to a place to get his child back with paying the debts. I think the part that he got his revenge from a black guy in a match was his turning point. It was the most important because if he didn’t win that match he wouldn’t have money to feed his family because it was the only chance to show himself that he was still capable of boxing. The similar problem is puberty. Nothing is just different, puberty is always puberty. Our children may face lack of fuel, polar bears, beautiness of northpole and air pollution.

    2. Consistency is a good point to mention. The question is how consistent we are when it comes to facing a difficulty. I agree, I think that was the most important part of the film:)
